Bregstein a eu peu d&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat pour sa famille. La plupart des membres de la famille juive de son p\u00e8re, venant d&rsquo;Europe de l&rsquo;Est, avaient \u00e9migr\u00e9 vers les \u00c9tats-Unis ou plus loin \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle. La famille restante avait probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cim\u00e9e par les nazis ou \u00e9tait devenue inaccessible derri\u00e8re le Rideau de Fer imp\u00e9n\u00e9trable. Apr\u00e8s la guerre, il pensait pendant des ann\u00e9es qu&rsquo;ils \u00e9taient les seuls Bregstein restants en Europe, \u00e0 Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>Sa qu\u00eate de son histoire juive propre a commenc\u00e9 en 1991 en Lituanie, o\u00f9 une partie de sa famille avait \u00e9t\u00e9 assassin\u00e9e. \u00c0 Tel Aviv, New York et Montevideo, il a d\u00e9couvert des membres de la famille longtemps perdus qui lui ont racont\u00e9 des histoires r\u00e9v\u00e9latrices sur ses parents et grands-parents. Son grand-p\u00e8re avait saut\u00e9 par la fen\u00eatre en mai 1940, le jour o\u00f9 les Pays-Bas ont capitul\u00e9, en criant : \u00ab\u00a0Ils vont tuer mon fils !\u00a0\u00bb Ce drame familial tu
